We want you!

You don’t have to be an animal expert to help out at the Columbus Lowndes Humane Society. You just need to have the time and desire to lend a helping hand. We are a non-profit organization, so our success depends on giving volunteers like yourself. Here are some ways to help out:

Foster Care

Keeping animals in your home that are not able to be in the shelter for one reason or another. This would include: dogs or cats with special needs; expectant mother dogs or cats and their puppies or kittens; orphaned kittens or puppies; dogs or cats that are under weight; dogs or cats that need extra socialization; dog or cats that have been at the shelter for at least two months. These fosters will assist in finding homes for these animals.

Doggie Pals

Helping with walking, bathing, and socializing the dogs that are at the shelter.

Kitty Cuddlers

Helping with socializing and loving on the cats at the shelter.

Homeward Bound Foster Care

This program is set up to take dogs to other humane societies in different states. The dogs selected for this program will already have homes set up for them. They just need temporary fostering until the transport trip.

Reporting Abuse and Neglect

The Columbus Lowndes Humane Society encourages anyone who has seen abuse or neglect of an animal to contact the appropriate authorities.

PetSmart Adoption Events

When: ON HOLD DUE TO COVID-19
Where: PetSmart, 1486 Old Aberdeen Road, Columbus, MS
Time: 10am – 2pm (There are two volunteer shifts – 1st: 10am til noon; 2nd: Noon til 2pm)
What’s Involved: We set up a tent in front of the store and bring a variety of adoptable dogs and puppies*. We also have cats and kittens located inside the store that stay there 24/7. The general public is invited and all the animals present are adoptable right on the spot. Your job would be: to help set up/take down the tent and cages/animals (depending on which shift you are signed up for): walk the animals during the event; answer any questions a potential adopter might have about each animal. Aside from that, you’re welcome to get all the tail waggin’ and kisses you can stand!

* We also have a time slot before the adoption event for those that would be willing to meet at the shelter and help load the animals into the truck for transport.

The Columbus Lowndes Humane Society accepts all animals that are relinquished by any owner who feels they are no longer able to care for them. We do no limit the specific amount of time an animal remains at our shelter. All animals in good health and of good temperament are placed up for adoption. We do, however, on a case by case basis have to euthanize some animals. What are your thoughts on this issue?
