Homeward Bound & Rescue Waggin'

The Homeward Bound Project of MS is a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization operating since 2007 in Starkville, MS. Homeward Bound is run entirely by volunteers, most of whom are attending or working at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. They work with shelters in Mississippi to transport adoptable dogs (and sometimes cats) to adoption guaranteed rescues in the Northeast, thereby giving them a chance at a better life. Homeward Bound volunteers are incredibly passionate about the work they do and we welcome you to find that passion too!

The Homeward Bound Project started in 2007 with three Mississippi State University vet students, Megan Caulfield, Krista Gazzola, and Amy White, who noticed the imbalance between the large supply of adoptable dogs in the South and the high demand in the Northeast. They set to work creating the first successful transport program developed, maintained, and operated by students at a veterinary school. Their mission was to take adoptable puppies and young adult dogs from overcrowded shelters in the South, and transport them to adoption guaranteed shelters in the Northeast, where there is a high demand for adoptable dogs. Today, the Homeward Bound Project is still run by vet students and continues to send deserving dogs up north with a chance for a better life.

All pets taken north by Homeward Bound are spayed or neutered, have age-appropriate vaccinations, have been screened for diseases, and have spent their last 14 days in Mississippi homes in foster care. All of these animals have been tested for heartworms and have been started on heartworm and flea/tick preventatives prior to being sent on their way to their new homes up north!

The PetSmart Rescue Waggin' program helps us move unwanted dogs to places where they're in demand. Location is everything: Some cities have too many homeless dogs and puppies; others have waiting adopters.

So every day, the PetSmart Charities® Rescue Waggin’ program picks up selected dogs and puppies from partner shelters in areas where there are more dogs and puppies than can be placed through adoption. Then we transport them to places where they get adopted, often within days.

In fact, the Rescue Waggin' program has helped save the lives of more than 70,000 dogs and puppies since we started it in 2004.
